PUGILISTIG HONOR.
The^London Sportsman contains a remarkable letter from John M'Donald, the principal second to John C. Heenan in his encounter with Tom King. If true, it shows how much dependence may sometimes be placed in those who engage in the manly art. M'Donald says :~" It is not pleasant to speak evil ot one who is dead, but I am compelled to state — and I do it without fear of contradiction — that Heenan sold the battle. I also state that be received no less a sum than £4,000 for so doing from a person still alive and well known; that an agreement was written out by a solicitor; that the money was lodged in this solicitor's hands before the fight ; and that it was paid by him to Heenan afterwards. I regret to write tbiie of a man who is dead, but two gentlemen (whose names I here give you) who ars well known on the turt can verify everything I have stated."
M. Cucheual-Clarigny, writing on the Eastern Question in the Revue de Deux Mondes, says :—": — " The prestige of England is henceforth destroyed throughout the Oriental regions. Fortified by the effectual protection with which England had covered Islam in 1855 (which prevented the Mussulmans of India from taking part in 1857 in the revo. lution of the Sepoys), this prestige is ruined by the naisf or tunes which overwhelmed Turkey. It is certain that the proteges of England are crushed without mercy, and that success is assured to the proteges of Russia. Oriental fatalißm will see in this sudden overthrow the will of God and the indication of the conduct to be pursued by well advised and prudent men. Russia will not need to seek friends and allies in the Eaßt ; they will come to her of themselves , and it will suffice for her to lift her finger to put in arms the whole of Central Asia."
