Murray, for Northern ports, May 31 . . Charlea Edward, for Northern ports, 2nd June. VESSELS IK FORT. Waipara, Lioness, Tauranga, and Lizzie Guy. The Lioness returned from Greymouth yesterday, and towed in the schooners Tauranga and Lizzie Guy, the former from Oamaru, the latter from Ly ttelon . The Waipara returned to port yesterday afternoon. The Tararua arrived at the Bluff on the 22nd inst , from Melbourne via Hobart Town, but for some reason the Press Agency neglected to wire the information: She will arrivs here on the 28th inst.. when she will be. despatched direct for Melbourne. Commenting on the inquiry lately held in reference to. the s.s, Chimborazo, the South Australian Register? aay s: — "In these days, when tlie eager cry 'is for rapid passages, and 'wtien there is such keen rivalry between different lines of vessels as to the quickness with which a voyage can be accomplished, there ia a strong temptatidn to captains to shorten the distance as much as (possible, even though extra risk is incurred. This is particularly the case with the regular coasting vessels which trade to Sydney. It therefore becomes imperative that masters of vessels should be made to understand that they cannot run such risks without rendering themselves liable to heavy penalties. We are afraid the sentence passed upon Captain Hall will not convey this lesson, but that it will rather encourage captains to greater carelessness than has prevailed in the past. Hence we cannot but think it is a mistake that a severer punishment was not inflicted." The Melbourne Argus of April 26th remarks: — "The risks to life and property caused by masters of vessels hugging the shore too closely in their anxiety to make fast passages was strongly commented upon yesterday by Captain Payne, the chairman of the Steam Navigation Bbard. The case under investigation was that of the s.s. Nelson, which struck on a well known reef off Cape Otway on the passage from Warnambool to Melbourne. From the evidence it appeared that Captain Thompson had hauled her too close round Cape Otway the consequence being that she touched the ground aft, breaking some of the fans of her screw propeller, but fortunately doing no other damage. The Board considered the accident was due to the default of the captain, and decided to suspend his certificate for three calendar months. In passing the sentence, Captain Payne commented on the risks which masters of vessels were now running, and said that such practices must be put a stop to at once, or accidents involving great loss of life would certainly occur. The Board therefore considered that, in the interests of the public, it was their duty to pass a severe sentence."
