Telegraphic, mails for Australian Colonies and Tasmania, per. Alhambra, close at the Bluff at 11 a.m. this day, 23rd instant; messages will be received at the Hokitika office up till 10 a.m.

The County Council sat yesterday afternoon, and until a late hour last evening. A report appears in another column.

We are requested to state that the Philharmonic Society have not decided to charge £1 Is as the annual subscription or entrance fee ; no arrangement having been yet arrived at. The sum demanded for the present is five shillinge.

Another of the early, settlers of the Coast, Mr F. W. Hine, of the Gridiron Hotel, died yesterday, after a. short illness. He was an active member of the Hospital Committee f or Beveral year,s t apd was vice-president of that institution for some time. In his business he was much lik,ed, and, was one. of the foremost on many, occasions in aiding in charitable works,. The funeral takes place to-morrow afternoon.

Friday, the 24th instant, being a Post-office holiday, all mails, for that day will be made up this day, at 7 p.m,

The banks will be closed to-morrow, it being the Queen's birthday.

Applications for the situation of wardsman to the Kumara Hospital will be received by the Secretary, Mr W. Nicholson, up to Monday, 27th instant, at. 6, p.m..

The full returns are not yet to hand from the whole, of the polling places in the Grey Valley, and it is therefore impossible to say whether Mr Harrison or Mr Reeves has been returned as member of the General Assembly. tAs will be s.een by our telegraphic news, Mr Reeves had polled at eight places 277 votes, Mr Harrison 236, and Mr Barrowman 144. The returns from the principal places are ki\own. but there are ten other outlying districts, which, up to the hour of the Telegraph Office closing, had not been received . Those to hand moßt probably are Grey> Paroa, Brunnerton, Ahaura, Reef ton, Black's Point, Boatman's, and Cobden. Should this be a correct conjecture, the following returns have yet to come: — Marsden, Greenstone, Dunganville, Maori Gully, Hatter's, Moonlight, Half Ounce, Noble's, Little Grey, and Seventeen-mile Beach. We are inclined to think that as Mr Reeves has so far a majority rof 41, that his return is most likely to.be recorded, by the messages which will be received to-day.

The prospectus of the New Zealand brush and broom Company (limited) has been issued at Dunedin. The capital is to be £5000, in 1000 shares of £5 each; 5s per share, payable on application, and 5s on allotment j The- p*rst issue will be 400 shares, on ( which i£ is proposed to call up £2 10s per share within 12 months. The promoter of the Company is Mr A. M. Parker, who has discovered that the New Zealand cabbage tree contains a first class fibre, capable of being ntilised in the manufacture of all kinds of brooms and brushes; and Mr Parker in conjunction with Messrs Gibbs and Clayton, having obtained a patent granting him protection for the space of 14 years for the manufacture oi' tho New Zealand cabbage tree broom, is desirous of forming a Company with the view. of establishing a factory on- a more extensive scale than he is personally able to do. It is proposed to carry on the manufacture of brushwareof all kinds.
