VESSELS IN POUT.
Lioness, Waipara, Zephyr, aud Charles Edward.
The Charles Edward reached here yesterday foienoon froia Greymouth. She will be despatched to-day on her return trip at 11 a.m., booking passengers for all New Zealand ports.
The Albion, from Melbourne, and the Maori, from Nelson, are due here to-day. The brigantine Zephyr, after a rapid passage of seven days, waa towed to the wharf yesterday by the Lioness. Captain Connor reports leaving Melbourne on the 11th inst. ; arrived off the Coast on the 17th, but the weather being squally hove to for twelve hours, reached the roadstead the following day ; experienced strong westerly gales and heavy sea tbrougout the voyage ; on 16th the^ gale increased to a hurricane, and was obliged to lay to for sixteen hours, at which time the barometer fell to 28*90, a tremendous sea running all the time the gale lasted. She brings a large and assorted cargo for this port.
Captain Bignell, of the Waipara, reports leaving Hokitika on the 3rd inst., arriving at Okarito the following morning at day light ; entered in at 10 o'clock, and in going up the river struck a snag which broke the port propeller shaft and one blade of the starboard propeller ; received a new shaft from Greymouth at 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon last ; fixing it the following tide ? left Okarito on Sunday last at 2 o'clock, arriving in the roadstead at 9.30 p.m. same day, and at the wharf at 11 p.m. She brings a few passengers and but little cargo.
The schooner Sarah and Mary, from Lyttelton, was towed into the Grey river on Sunday. The schooners Owake and Kaiumft, which were compelled to run to sea on the 10th inst., have not yet returned to the Grey roadstead. The Garibaldi sailed yesterday for Lyttelton.
