EDUCATION DISTRICT OF WESTLAND.

By the etutcuieut of receipts aud expeudituro on account of the Kuiattra Reserve, as given iv the Annual Report of the Board of Education, it is shown that the whole of the proceeds from the reserve has been spent in Kumara, either in the reserve itself or on the school there. The Bum of £2183 4s is shown to have been expended duriug the years 1876 and 1877 as follows :-rExpeuditure on Schoolhouse, £1150 7s; on teacher's house, £424 sa ; ou clearing, fencing and draining £266 4s; on school furniture, £190 7s ; and architect's charges, £120 Is. This amonut of £2183 4s exceeds the sum paid to the Board's Education Fund from the same source by £128 6s Bd, In the same year, 1876, the receipts and expenditure on account of the Kumara Reserve wore as follows : —

Receipts.— Eents, £2165 12s 6d ; mining contracts, £93 16s ; timber licenses, £20 10s; business agreements, £55 9s; transfers, £46 17s 6d ; contributions of sectionholders towards making Tui and Fifth-streets, £87; Miscellaneous, 2s. Total receipts, £2469 7s ; balance, £337 16s— total, £2807 3s.

Expenditure. — Clearing and mnking streets, £370 7s. surveys, £108 17s; printing and advertising, £46 2s ; agent's, travelling expenses, £13 11s 6d ; fees for Crown grants, £4 2s 4d ; legal expenses, £41 19s ; miscellaneous, expenditure, £167 6s 10s. Total expenditure, £752 5s 8d ; to Board's education fund account £2054 17s 4d— total, £2807 3s.

For the year ending 1877, the following figures are given : —

Receipts. — Rents, £850 10s; mining contracts, £62 10s 6d ; timber licenses, £18 ; business agreements, £50 7s ; agricultural areas aud timber blocks, £67 7s 6d; transfers, £48 12s 6d, Miacel-

laneous (including cost of preparing leases, £212 16s 6d ; total, £1310 4s Od ; balance (o debit of next year's apcoimt, £478 15s lid ; total, 1788 19s Ud.

Expenditure. — Balance at Ist January, 1877, £337 16s ; clearing and making streets, £388 19s ; surveyor, £170 3s 4d ; survey labor, £168 4s 9d ; building, £139 Os 2d ; printing and advertising, £96 sa ; travelling expenses of agent and members of board, £91 10s ; legal expenses, £191 3s 7d ; miscellaneous, £123 16s sd ; agents salary, £82 Is 8d ; total, £1788 19s lid. The two years together are therefore summarised as follows, showing a transfer of £2054 17s 4d, to the Education Fund account, which has been expended as above stated in the £2183 4s, and a total of £2203 9a 7d ; expended on streets, surveys, building, legal expenses, printing, travelling expenses &c, in connection with Kumara, leaving a debit balance in the whole account of £478 15s lid :—: —

Receipts: — Rents, £3016 2s 6d ; mining contracts, £156 6s 6d ; timber licenses, £38 10 Od ; business agreement*, £105 16 Od ; agricultural areas and timber blocks, £67 7s 6d ; transfers, £95 10s; contributions of sectionholders towards making streets, £87 ; miscellaneous including cost of preparing leases, £212 ISs 6d ; total receipts, £3779 11s; balance, 478 15s lid ; total, £4258 6s lid.

Expenditure. — Clearing and making streets, £759 6s; surveyor and survey labor, £447 5a Id ; building, £139 Os 2d ; printing and advertising, £142 7s ; agent's salary, £82 Is 8d ; travelling expenses of agent and members of Board, £105 Is 6d ; fees for crown grant?, £4 2s 4d ; legal expenses including preparation of leases, £233 2s 7d ; miscellaneous, £291 3s 3d ; total expenditure, £2203 9a 7d ; paid to board's education fund account, £2054 17s 4d ; total, £4258 6s lid.
