EHB GOVERNOR ON EDUCATION. Auckland, May 4.

The Governor presided at the inaugural meeting of the Auckland Young Men's Christian Association. In his opening address he said he desired when opportunity offered to evince his appreciation of Associations such as the one in connection with which the present meeting was held, lie considered the character of progress in our national ways greatly depended upon education and the character of the social condition of its inhabitants. He referred to the spread of knowledge and increased facilities of education for the young. Unfortunately in the sectarian difference amongst parcuts, au association favoring secular and religious education in 'he public schools of thi country, it is (bund impossible to conduct religious education in public schools so as to meet the views of various religious bodies, and therefore it is not essential that in every Christian country religious education should be available for the young. He advocated the formation of associations -such as the Auckland Young Men's Christian Association, and considered that they were the best means of preventing drunkenness.
