The Westland portion of the Suez mail arrived by coach from Christchurch on Saturday evening.
The canvassers for the Mikonui Water Race did .not sell a single share in Hokitika.
The Rev. Father Henneberry preached at Rosa yesterday.
Mr E. J. Lee, Returning Officer for the electoral districts of Hokitika, Grey River, apd Totara, will hold court of revision as follows:— Hokitika, on 23rd May at the Resident Magistrate's Court, at 11 o'clock. Grey River, at the Resident Magistrate's Court on 25th May, at eleven o'clock; TJotara, at the Residpnt Magistrate's Court, on 2.9 th May, at the same hour.
On Saturday last the fourteenth anniversary of the West Coast Timks was celebrated by a ball and supper at the Town Hall. There were about sixty persons present, including the proprietor, the employes of the paper, and their friends. Dancing commenced early, and was kept up w,ith vigor until midnight, at which hour, " God Save the Queen " terminated the proceedings. A pic nic had been arranged for, but fate, in the shape of the Clerk of the Weather, stepped in and prevented the outing. The ball was therefore impromptu, but was none the less successful.
In every place where Uooppr and Bailey's menagerie exhibited near where Maoris were living, they flocked in large numbers to see the show. There were particularly etruck with the elephants — and described them thus — " Kaipai horse two tail."
Mr Foulis, late of Edinburgh, has been appointed inspector of the Wanganui Education district, at a salary of four-hundred pounds per annum and fifty pounds travelling expenses.
Mr Clark, C.E., strongly condemns the discharge of sewage into harbors, and spoke very vigorously upon the subject at a civil gathering at Wellington lately.
A little girl named Dowber died under rather singular circumstances at German Bay, near Christehurchj v -The evidence of Dr Guthrie at the inquest showed that a bean had become fixed in the division of the
windpipe which supplies the right lung, iind that suffocation had been the conse" quence. The Nelson Colonist pfatpg that: — The promoters of the Nelson Jam aud Preserving Company haye held two meet-ings during h^% week to Jake the necessary steps for t|ie formation of the company. A provisional conimjttee has now been appointed, uud it is probable the prospectus will shortly be issued. It is anticipated that everything will be in readiness to commence operations ivirly in the next fruit season.
