RECENT DISCOVERIES.
Mr Edison, of America, has perfected a recording telephone, which not only transmits the sounds of the human voice but records them, so that at any time afterwards the very same sounds, perfect in "very respect, can he reproduced. The jrospect which this discovery opens up to the world is amazing. When the mode of producing the sounds by means of the telephone is perfected, the world will have entire concerts combining tbeJUtonesJland harmonies of the finest orchestras, and most noted singers reproducible at will ia drawiner-rooms, and public a«semblies, at a cost cf almost nothing. No doubt companies will yet be formed to manufacture and sell such apparatus. Only think of Norms, or Sonnambula, being producible with the strains of Patti's voice as Norma or Amina, along with the entire accessories of chorus and orchestra in parlors and drawing-rooms. This sounds like romance, but it will certainly be realised. Another important invention is worthy of notice. The echolin, a new stringed instrument of the fiddle type, is 9oid to be superior in every respect to the best cr?raoua fiddles, having a sweeter and richer taw, and being far more powerful and sensitive to the bow. It is played on like the fiddle, but differs considerably from the fiddle in shape. If the statements made respecting the powers of tbe echolin should not be exaggerated costly c -e:»;onas will soon be at a discount.
