THE HOKITIKA BRIDGE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,~~Tu this day's Ross Guardian, in connection with my remarks in the Borough Council, as to the location of the bridge over the Hokitika, appears the following :—": — " Therefore we can only conclude that Mr Walker has been drawing upon his imagination and nas hoodwinked his brother Councillors." This is plainly telling me that I have made a mis-state-ment, to use no stronger phrase. In order to set that matter at rest would you allow me space to insert t.he following letter, received by me on the subject from Mr Thomas Swain, a well-known resident on the South Spit: — Having been informed that you wish me to do all I can in getting up a petition on this side of those in favor of bridging the Hokitika river somewhere about the original site, instead of the Kanieri, I* have much pleasure to inform you that I telegraphed to K9ss right off, where there are two good men canvassing, and also at Redman's. I have got a list at the house with nearly forty signatures already. I expect 200 from the iioss district, which will be a good auxiliary to your Hokitika petition, for presentation to the Premier when he comes. I do not see anyone taking action buo yourself. Mr Glossop was over on Friday. Surely the object is good, more so to Gibson's Quay, where the traffic will be great. I hope you will still continue to use your best endeavors to get a public meeting, or a monster petition reaiy by the time. By so doing your south side friends will be most thankful. I do not wish to add another word. E am, &c, R. Walker. Hokitika, February 19.
