CHRISTCHURCH SUPREME COURT.
Chuisichithch, January 10.
At the Supreme Court yesteiday evening, in the case of Michael Murphy, commission agent, and W. 11. Wykes, his clerk, for conspiracy to defraud the creditors of one Hamil, a verdict of not guilty was recorded. According to the evidence of Hainil, Murphy induced him when in monetary difficulties to take, comparatively speaking, a very small amount for his Btock-in-trade, at the same time telling him that he could set his creditors at defiance. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty because they thought there was not sufficient evidence to implicate Wykes and Murphy, and that they could not be convicted alone of conspiracy. Judge Johnston gave Murphy a very strong caution as to future conduct.
To-day, Albert John Chapman for larceny as a bailee, was brought in not guilty.
Richard Tubman, senteaced to fifteen years for forgery, was again placed in the dock, and Judge Johnston said though he did not admit fifteen years was too heavy a sentence he had thought over the case, as was his custom, and in order that it might not bear an appearance of too great severity had decided to reduce the sentence to ten years.
