Gilmer, Esq., Westport, R. Rowlands, Esq. Westport, and C. G. Andrews, Esq., Westport. Bankers : Bank of New South Wales. Solicitors : Messrs Fell and Atkinson, Nelson. J. W. Humphrey, Interim Secretary. The object of this Company ia to work a Coalmining Lease of 800 acres, situated at Waimangaroa Basin, Mount Rochfort Coalfield, near Westport. The ground comprised in this lease has been very carefully selected from three prospecting areas of 5000 acres, and about £1000 has been expended in obtaining the lease, prospecting, surveys, and other works necessary to prove the mine. In reference to this lease, Mr R. B. Denniston, Government Coal Viewer, in his evidence given befo r e tbe Royal Commis«ion at Westport, says: — " 'Ihe total tonnage in this lease, including the Ea*t and West slopes, is about 3,600,000 tons, the Coal being of the best quality,' 1 Mr S. Herbert Cox, F.C.ti. and F.G.S. Assistant -Geologist, in his report on the survey of the Buller Coalfield, under date 13th June, 1876, says: — "The Koranui Company's Lease, which is situated at the bead of Sims Spur, and contains Coal of a superior quality and hardness, may readily be worked by a self-acting tram from the face of the coal in the W"imangaroa break to the lailway. * * * If this Company push thir work on, ns they profess it ia their intention to do, they will, in all probability, be (he first to have the genuine hard Conl in the market." And further on he says : — " With regard to the Koranui Company's Tramway, a good supply of timber exists along the proposed line which would serve for construction, and, also for subsequent workings." The report vi Analysis of Coal from part of the field at Woolwich Dockyard shows that it is equal to the best north of England Coal for steam purpose (vide Admiralty report on Nelson coal presented to Nelson Provincial Council, March 16th , 1866.) ' Tbe lease is tor a term of forty-two pears, from the Ist ot January, 1877, and the Royalty to be paid is 6d per ton, for the first twenty-one years, and Is per ton for the remainder of the term. The Railway is completed and open for traffic from Westport to Waimangaroa. and the Wellington Coal Company have made a branch line of one mile five chains in length up the river, and from this point it is proposed to make a tramway to the Coal, about two miles in length. The Government coal waggons will be loaded at the end of Tramway line, thence forwarded over Government railway to Westport, where there is now building railway wharf, station, sidings, and a lare;e viaduct and coal staiths, irom which the coal will be shipped direct into the vessels. The Port of Westport offers great facilities for •hipping. The average depth of water on the bar being 12 to 15 feet, and it is expected when the Protective Works, now In course of construction, are completed the depth will be increased to from 18 to 20 feet. By careful computation it has been esti mated that the cost of opening up and connecting the mine with the Government railway, including all necessary plant, will not exceed £15,000, and further, the coal can be shipped free on board at Westport at 8s per ton. The cost of this property to the Company is £5100, the whole of which the promoters have agreed to accept in paid-up scrip in the Company, and in addition {hey bind themselves to take up not less than £1700 worth of shares, thus showing their faith in the hona fides of the mine. The terms of the lease will compel the Company to have the mine in working order early in 1878, so that shareholders may relay on having returns for their money within twelve months. Prospectuses and Forms of application for Shares maj be obtained of F. A. LEARMONTH & CO., Brokers, Retell-strcet. Hokitika,
