Sir, — If the purpose of; an. amateur entertainment is to obtain myalls to> raise money to support or further objtfetg for which thW ffre ostensibly giyeiti, ■ It"sqes appear tt»a£ co^cerjjs and 'l^Mures fall short of the, des|rei| end. E&r it is evident, by past a^d oresenf resMa, ! that music and its' adjuncts do not pfcy for much more than £as. . . "WiThout question this is to be deplored. Hence arises another quest^.. rHovy -to get up an entertainment titiai will' yield solid -and satisfactory returns. Cannot Hokitika do that which a less influential, but, perhaps a more august body, namely, the House of Commons, have a combination ot all the talents.
his brings me down to the drama. The drama in 4 place like this 44 e lightful . sjpot, is sure'fo take better than music (as here rendered.) Because people cap under= stand an author who speaks in a language all here understand, and whose theme is, tlie prominent phases of humanity and nature. " One, touch of nature makes $he whole world kin." But here they claim no more kin with Haydn, than they do with Corner. I would be very sorry to see the riddle and the bow hung up, aa is advised in the immortal ballad of "Uncle Edward." Therefore it is open to consideration whether jointly music and drama cannot blend, to achieve good, for good purposes, It is not unfair to consider the Hokitika Dramatic Club defunct, It has done' well, yet, it might have made a graceful ending, because many who have an ambition for Thespian fame, have not liked to jump their claim, while the ghost of its existence flickered. Now, however, that it is dead, and makes no sign, the way is open to all duch as, wish to use their tajfcn^s for benevolence. MIHI.
