There were neither arrivals nor departures ou Saturday or yesterday.

The Anchor Liae steamer Charles Edward is expected to arrive to-day, from Nelson and Westport. It is unlikely that the Murray, which is detained at Greymouth owing to the heavy sea, will come on to Hokitika.

The Albion is expected to arrive in the roadstead this day, from Melbourne direct. As quickly as practicable after arrival she will be tendered and despatched on her voyage to Melbourne via Neir Zealand ports.

The Otago is due to-morrow from New Zealand ports, and will leave for Melbourne direct immediately after being tendered-

Messrs Chesney and 60's brigantine Zephyr, anchored in the roadstead on Saturday, and, weather permitting, will be brought alongside the wharf this morning. The Waipara reached Greymouth on Friday from Westporfc, and will probably nrrive alongside the wharf this morning. The schooners Lady Don and Strathnaver are loading at Lyttelton for this port. They will leave at an early date. Intelligence has been received in Sunderland of the wreck of the celebrated tea clipper Maitland, on a coral reef near Huan Island. A passing vessel noticed the wreck, and on proceeding to the island a bottle was found containing documents which leave little doubt *hat the crew pf about thirty hands have all been lost in the South Pacific. The Maitland, sailing a point off the wind, was considered to be about the fastest clipper afloat. She made the fastest voyage on record, from Sunderland to. Hong Kong in eighty-four days, and competed several times in the great races from China with new season teas. She left London at the beginning of last year, and was wrecked on 25th May, while on a voyage from Brisbane to China for tea. ' ' '

The New Zealand Shipping Company have received the following advices from London dated April 20 regarding ships from that port to the colony. Sailed, Robin Dunlo'p and Eletchero, for Auckland; Oriana and Star of China, for Canterbury; WoodJark, 1 for Dun edin; Countess of Kin lore for Napier and Bluff. Loading—Teyiotdale, Knight of JSiiowden, Lactura, Alumbagh, and Cordora.

A fire M r as lighted by means of wood and petroleum in the foreholJ, in which a volume of steam was injected from the boilers. In ten minutes the compartment was filled, and in another ten minutes the conflagration was entirely subdued. Had the hold been filled with cargo the fire Avould have been extinguished even more rapidly. This second series of experiments has consequently been very successful, and means will no doubt be taken to fie the ship; of the company witli the neccssiry means to use steam in an unfortunate emergency.
