[PBR ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] ARRIVED. Greymouth.— 23rd, 10 a.in., Murray, from Hokiiika. SAILED. Westport. — 22ud, 7 p iv , Charles Edward, for Hokitiks. ■ The p.s. Charles Edward arrived in the river yesterday morning from Nelson and Westport. Captain Holmes reports leaving Nelson on Saturday last at 4 p.m., experienced light S.W. winds, arririug at Westport at 1 p.m. on Sunday. On Monday discharged cargo and left at 7 p.m., coming down the coast under easy steam aud crossing this bar at 7 a.m. as above. The Charles Edward is announced to leave • to-night, at 6 o'clock (circumstances permitting), for GreyniOHth, Westport, and Nelson, taking passengera for Wellington, Taranaki, and Auckland. The s.s. Kennedy is the next steamer to arrive from Nelson. She may be expected on Sunday next, and vriU leave (circumstances permitting) on Monday at noon. The 5.3. Waipara did not proceed to Okaiito yesterday, as expected, in consequence of the unfavorable state of the weather. It is expected she will sail for that port on Thursday or Friday next. The schooner Bonnie Lass cleared cut from Nelson for this port on the 16th inst. Her arrival here may daily be expected. The ship City of Auckland cleared out at the Custom House, Auckland, on the 17th inst., with a cargo valued at £44,254 3s 4d. The principal items were :— Wool, £16,596 10s; gum, £9065; gold, £8000; silver, £49oo; leather, £2350 13s 4d; cotton, £1079; cottonseed, £618 tallow, £853 f- and a" large quantity of sundries, consisting of copra, cheese, hides, cocoanut-oil, iron-sand, bellmetal, curiosities, timber, "plants, bones, silver-plate, and bark. On the sth ult., a magnificent steamer, named the James C. Stevenson, was launched from Messrs Palmer's yard, at Jarrow. The dimensions of the vessel are 300- feet long by 35 broad. She is the first of a fleet of large Bteamers intended for the southern passenger trade, under the management of Messrs Edwards and Allen, and will be commanded by Captain Beale, late of the New Zealand and Panama Mail, f Company's ~Bervie"e. " The engines, built by Messrs Palmer; are of 250horse powder. .Alexander Longmuir, master of the Challenge, having been convicted, on the 2nd August, 1871, at Sydney, New South Wales, of two charges of assault on natives of the South Sea Islands, whom he was endeavpring to kidnap, and who were unlawfully imprisoned and detained on board the Challenge against their will, in April, 1871, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment in Sydney gaol for the first offence, and one year's imprisonment for the second. The Board of Trade have iv consequence cancelled Alexander Longmuir's certificate of service as master, No. 50,884. An official inquiry was held at Greenwich on the 19th October, 1871, into the circumstances attending the loss of the Underly, which was stranded on the 26th of September 1871, off the Isle of Wight. The Court decided that the stranding occurred through the carelessness of the pilot, but that Mr Edward Hudson Tidmarsh,the master of the Underly, was in fault for improperly leaving his ship in the sole charge of a person whose compulsory duties, as defined by law, had ceased at Dungeness. The Court therefore suspended for three months Mr Tidmarsh's certificate of competency as Master, No. 6832.
