THE WRECK OF THE MEGÆRA.
The following letter respecting fires seen on Amsterdam Island, has been forwarded to the Commissioner of Cußtonis. A« the islands of Amsterdam and St. Pauls are not far distant, and their names are frequently transposed on the chart, there can he little doubt that the fires have been made by the crew of the Megsera troop ship. «18tU August, 1871.—Sir,—In view of the importance of the subject, I trust! may be excused for troubling yon. About a week part a vessel, tfie Punjaub, arrived from England. She reports having, when three miles off Amsterdam Island, teen several (seven) fires on the shoTe. Ab tW» is generally known to be a desolate and uninhabited island the idea naturally occurß, seeing tbe island it in the track of ships not sailing on the great circle, ibat there may be on the wland some tnrvivor* of one of the many unaccountedfor thipi, as it is hardly likely even on the hypothesis that there are Bealers on the ialand that were combustible matter w not too plenty they would moke (seven) fires ior other purposes than to call the attention of the passing ship. ThU it Beems to have failed to'do, and it remains ia the discretion of the Government to determine whether the three colonies, Victoria, New South WaJftJ and South Australia, should not do something totettlethe question. Apologising for the intrusion on your valuable time, I am, Bir, yourt very respectfully, -S. W. Vinby> Melbourne."
