Som idea of the distance these modern rifled cannon can thiow a shot will be f'i mcd by the general reader when he letlects that 8000 yards represent a distance of mure than four miles and a-half ; that is, a WhitAvorth shot might be well aimed from the southern flops of High-gate-hil! at an object on the further side of the Thames. This, hoAvever, does not rt'piescnt the carrying distance of the 9-mch Whitworth. On the 20th November, a range of 10.300 yards (more than fh'e miles and three-quarters) Avas attained. The shot on this occasion Aveighed 2501bs cha ge of powder oOlbs and the elevation 33 degrees. The very next day the same gun b ats its previous performance. With 34*5 degrees elevation it threw a shell weighing f.lOlbs with oOlbs poAvdcr, 11.157 yards, "to the first graze," being upwards of six miles and a quarter ! This is stated to be 1000 yards farther than the fluhl of any projectile from any gun in this or foreign countries.
