In the report of the WhitAVorth and Armstrong Committee AYe find the following :—": — " It further appears, from the table of ranges, combined with the inspection of the probable rectangle?, that, the Whitworth gun made good practice up to a range of 8000 yards, Avhich is about 2000 yards in cxci ss of the ranges attained by either of the Armstrong guns at the same elevation of 21 degrees." Som idea of the distance these modern rifled cannon can thiow a shot will be f'i mcd by the general reader when he letlects that 8000 yards represent a distance of mure than four miles and a-half ; that is, a WhitAvorth shot might be well aimed from the southern flops of High-gate-hil! at an object on the further side of the Thames. This, hoAvever, does not rt'piescnt the carrying distance of the 9-mch Whitworth. On the 20th November, a range of 10.300 yards (more than fh'e miles and three-quarters) Avas attained. The shot on this occasion Aveighed 2501bs cha ge of powder oOlbs and the elevation 33 degrees. The very next day the same gun b ats its previous performance. With 34*5 degrees elevation it threw a shell weighing f.lOlbs with oOlbs poAvdcr, 11.157 yards, "to the first graze," being upwards of six miles and a quarter ! This is stated to be 1000 yards farther than the fluhl of any projectile from any gun in this or foreign countries.
