BURNING OF THE SHIP CITY OF AUCKLAND. GENERAL ELECTIONS. (i'er oni;vir,LE's teleorvm company, ' reuti:r's agents.) Nelson, Jan. 26. At the nomination for the City yesterday, the following gentlemen were proposed : — Messrs Curtis, Shepherds J. C. Richmond, Lightbrand, and M'Gregor, The latter withdrew. The show of hands was in favor of Mr Curtis and Mr Lightbrand.

The meeting lasted three and a half hours, and the attendance was reduced to a very small number before its close. Mr Lightbrand was not present, and his name was given in without his knowledge. Mr Shepherd read telegrams which had passed between Mr Luckie and Mr Featherstone, concerning a statement made by the latter in Nelson, that he had obtained for the Government an offer of four hundred and. fifty thousand pounds, at three and a half per cent, which the Government did not accept because the Banks would have no commissiou. Mr Feathers toue admits the story so far as the offer of money is concerned, and also the refusal of the Government; but he denies it was from consideration of the Banks, but because the Government did not want the money. Dunedin, t7an. 26. At tho CiTvorsham election, Mr Cantrell, an opponent of the Government, defeated Mr M'lndoo. Mr Cantrell polled lGr> votes, and Mr M'lndoe 107. j j\f 61.c JjalCOS, .Ur ITaughtun lulS polled 147, and Mr Shophcrd 77. Tho returns from two small districts have not come in, but they cannot influence the result. Tho Times libel case has been adjourned for a week, to enable Mr Gisborne and the officers of the Telegraph Department to bo in attendance. The funeral of Dr. Burns, which took place to-day, was attended by over 1000 persons. Tho various business places were closed, and tho clay observed as a close holiday. It is reported that an attempt will be made to upset Mr M'Lean's election on the ground of bribery. The full returns for the Lakes are to hand. They arc — Haughton, 221 ; Shepherd, 192.

The ship City of Aucklnnd whs discovered on fire this morning forward on the 'tween decks, where 300 tons of tow and flax had been stowed ou the previous day.

Efforts were mude. to extinguish the fire, but. being unavailing she was scuttled in mid harbor, where she now lies, with the water up to the deck. The cargo is now under water, and the vessel is much injured.

At the Waitemata election to-day, Messrs Henderson and Freer were nominated. The show of hauds were in favor of the latter.
