Mr M'Lean, a supporter of the present Government, has been elected for Waikouaiti.
Mr M'Lean polled 156, and Mr Hutcheson lot.

At tho polling to-day for a seat in the General Assembly for the town, Mr Calder had 142 votes, and Mr Lumsden 90.

In the Interprovincial Cricket Match between Ocago anil Canterbury, the latter won in one innings, having scored 209.

Private letters received hero state that Bishop Viard, of Wellington, while travelling on tho continent of Europe, was taken prisoner by the Prussians as a spy. At the time of the departure of the mail he was still in prison.
The Golden Crown Company have declared a dividend of £10.
The native meeting at Te Kuiti is still proceeding. Tapihana and Whitoria were present. Rewi says if the Waikatos require fig-hting they should attack Pohipipi at Taupo.

Mr Reader Wood defeated Mr T. W. King at Parnell. Mr O'Rourke was elected at Onehunga without opposition. W. Buckland and A. Clarke were elected for Franklyn.
Marshal Bazaine married a beautiful but poor young lady while he was with Maximilian in Mexico. She was a Mexican ady, and her name was Josefa Pena.
Some singular fac's concerning the different stimulants used by eminent men are given by an English writer, Dr Paris, in his " Pharmacalogia." Hobbs drank cold water when he was desirous of making a great intellectual effort. Newton smoked. Buonaparte took snuff. Pope, strong coffee. Byron, gin-and-water. Wedderburn, the first Lord Ashburton, always placed a blister on his chest when he had to make a great speech. The great Lord Erskine took large doses of opium. On the trial of Queen Caroline, Erskine, anxious to make a great speech, took an overdose of his favorite drug. The effect was striking ; he dropped into the arms of Lord Stanhope, who sajt next to him, ■
