CANTERBURY.
Christchurch. — The Tunes of the 17th inst. reports : —
In the grain market no alteration of any moment has occurred. Very few really good samples of wheat are offering, consequently we cannot report transactions of importance. Holders in store are firm at 4s 3d to 4s 6d ; but at these figures few Bales have transpired, except for the completion of shipments. There are plenty of buyers in the market at 4a, and this, in several instances, has been accepted for forward delivery. Flour moves off in fair-sized parcels at £11 12s 6d to £12. A steady business continues to be done in oats ; if anything, values are scarcely so firm. Heavy feed oats range from 2s 5d to 2s 6d ; Tartarian do, meet with some support at 2a 2 id to 2s 3|d. At present there is no sale for barley in this market, and holders are now trying Melbourne. The Alhambra and Tararua take over 80 tons.
Provisions are offering freely. Old cheese moves off in trifling parcels at 6d to 6}d ; new do, 4Jd to 4Jd. No improved demand can be noted for butter, and 6Jd to 7d is the full market value for export. Haras and bacon, in equal proportions, ready for shipment, are in some request at 8d to BJd. Sales are reported to have taken place ax a shade over the above quotation.
The same paper has the following report of the stock market :—
During the week large numbers of both sheep and cattle, principally store stock, have been brought forward, and prices in consequence have suffered a slight decline.
The price of fat sheep remains at IJd per lb, at which price wethers sold at the Carlton yards on Wednesday ; ewes, a shade less. Fat sheep, of fair quality, are now very plentiful, and in the course of a month there will be a superabundance, unless they are cleared off by the meat-preserving establishment*. Fat cattle may be quoted at 25s to 27s 6d per lOOlbs, although some of inferior quality have sold at less than the first of these figures — supply plentiful Store cattle are being brought forward in Urge numbers, and prices are much easier.
