MoHDAT, OCTOBSS 18. No .returns. The b.B. Murray is announced to-day to sail for W.estport, Nelson, and the Manukau this evening. The b.s. John Perm is also expected to-day, and will* have immediate despatch for Auckland direct. The Omeo is expected to arrive during the day. . S-he will be tendered by the Persevere and have immediate despatch. The Waipara went out last night on her Southern trip. She took a full cargo and a large number of pareengen, some of vrhom have gone to test a quartz reef at the Haast. During the passage of the ketch Courier, from Picton to Lyttelton, and when off the R.ikoraß, a school of whales, numbering upwards of 100, were seen by the persons on 'board the ketch. The brtgantfne Exomia, which arrived at Otago, from the Mauritius, on the Bth inst., wsb, on the 18th September, struck by lightning. It descended from the masthead, tore a piece out of the foretopmast above the cap,' split one plank of topnides on starbo; rd side, started tiro bolts, andonetreensil. It then passed through the cabin, ruhbed through the hold, and came out at the forecastle, knocked down two men forward, ■who were stunned for gome time, and then passed over the port Bide, knocked a piece of main-mil off, a sheet of copper and Bu&uered one of her bend planks. When the lightning passed through the hold, an apparent explosion took place similar to a h(.-avy report of firearms, after which, a sulphureous smell almost unbearable was experienced. On the pumps being sounded, it was found that the vessel, which was perfectly tight before? was making at the rale cf seven inches of water per hour. Since then the. vessel has taken up and is now inaking about five inches. " About nine o'clock on Saturday evening " (says the New Zealand Herald of the 4th Oct.) " a collision occurred between the paddle bteaaiera Enterprise, Captain Smith, and the Duke of Edinburgh, Captain W. Fairquhar, wluch was fortunately unattended with loss oi life, At the time of the accident the former vessel was coming up from the Thames, and the latter on her way down, the tiro Tessels meeting a little above Brown's Island. The night was -clear, and the lights ni caeh steamer appear to have been seen distinctly for a considerable time before the collision occured. We have received from Captain Smith his statement, and from Cap-t-iin Farquhar his version of the mishap, but withhold the particulars ;till after the official inquiry has been made. Both steamers have Buffered by the accident, the Enterprise having the whole of her port paddle-whe«l smashed, besides other damage. It is expected that the Dnke will be ready to resume her trip .on Tuesday, and in the meantime the Lady Bowen will leave daily with cargo."
