RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
(Before G. G. FitzGerald,Esq.,R.M.) Monday, January 4.
Drunkenness. — Jane Wilson, a child thirteen years of age, was fined 10s, and Is 6d costs, for being drunk and incapable. Disobeying an Ohder or Maintenance. — Edward Ashby, who had been ar rested on a warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, was charged with disjbeving an order of maintenance, whereby he was ordered to pay 30s a-week for the support of his -wife and family. The defendant said that if he had time allowed him he would send for his wife and family, and support them in Hokitika. His Worship said that he had no power to grant time. Defendant said that he had no property to levy on, and no means to pay. at present. His Worship said that * the amount the defendant owed was .£l9 10s. He would, however, take defendant's own security in £20, and one substantial surety in £20, for defendant's appearance on that dajMveek,
Larceny. — Kate Murray was charged with larceny to the value of £4 10s°in stealing, at Greymouth, one gold brooch, the property of Martha Dennon. The prisoner was remanded to Greymouth on the 6th instant, bail being allowed — prisoner in £50, and two sureties in £2;3 each.
'„ Exposing Grog for Saxe. — William Dollimore was charged with exposing for sale, at the Blue Spur, on the 19th December, two bottles of rum, he not having a license, contrary to the Public-house Ordinance. Mr Rees, who appeared for defendant, pleaded not guilty. Sergeant Mams said that defendant formerly held a publichouse license, which had run out. Witness seeing the door open, saw a number of bottles, and tasted the contents. Some of them contained cordials, and the two produced contained rum. Defendant admitted tha; they contained rum. Mr Kces said that his client had no intention to expose the liquor for sale. The house had been cleaned, and the door had been opened to dry the house. His Worship said he would give defendaut the benefit of the doubt, and dismiss the information.
Breach or Sunday Clause. — Antonio Danzi, landlord of the "William Tell Hotel, was fined £-2, and 9s costs, for having his licensed house open between the hours of eight p.m. and nine p.m. on Sunday, 27th ult.
Ohsthucting the Public Footpath. — Messrs John Maiison and Co., and Messrs Mulligan and ILtlligan, were .fined 10s each, and costs, for obstructing the footpath in ltevcll-street, by placing boxes thereon.
The Court then adjourned until to-mor-row (this day) at eleven o'clock.
