Gentlemen, — I have much pleasure in I acceding to your request that I should ■ offer myself as a candidate for the Borough , of Hokitika at the forthcoming Election of " Members for the County Council. As it would be impossible for me in the [ limit of a reply to jour requisition to enter into a full explanation of many matters on which information may be desired, I pro- } pose at an early date to meet the public, P in order that I may offer any explanations on such matters, and to afford the fullest 5 opportunity for their learning my opinion ' on many important questions .affecting the I well-being of the district. My intimate connection . with public I matters since the earliest days of Westland, and the repeated occasions on which I have ' had the pleasure of stating my views to the 1 electors, must however have enabled my ideas on most matters of inteiest to be generally known, and the generous support [ which has been hitherto accorded me when- ' ever I was a candidate for your suffrages, [ has made me feel that these opinions were 1 such as met with approval and regard. I thank you sincerely for the confidence 2 3'ou have been pleased to express in my past political career, as more especially since I have acted as the representative } head of the Government I have been at p times placed in positions of .peculiar difficulty ; but I can confidently assert that in all ' my actions I have been actuated solely by 1 a desire to do what was most for the permanent interests and future prosperity of ' the County. ' Now that AA r eßtland has been entrusted with large powers of local self-government, and has attained the right of expending ' her own revenue, an opportunity will be 3 afforded which has never before existed, r of developing her resources, and if returned I I will use my utmost endeavors to accomplish this end. Thanking you for the honor you have done me. I remain, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, ' 4007 JAS, A. BONAR,
