MUNICIPAL.

The application to Ilokitika of the new Municipal Act passed by the Colonial Parliament has materially modified the institutions of local government in the Borough. The election of Mayor is now vested in the Borough Council, instead of being left to the free votes of the burgesses as under the old ordinance. The first Mayor elected under this new system is Mr Evan Prosser, a well esteemed citizen, who has served the town iv many capacities, and who deserves the honor which has been conferred upon him. Under the new Act three members of the present Council of nine retire, and there successors are to be elected to-morrow. The system of cumulative voting is introduced, the votes ranging from one to five in number, according to the assessed value of the property rated. Nine candidates have offered them.- . selves for the three seats, the majority of whom are gentlemen of good posi-

tion and standing in the town, and the burgesses cannot fail to make a good choice, although they must face the necessity of rejecting men quite as eligible in all respects as those they vote for. The willingness displayed on this occasion to undertake the discharge of public duties, is a new and encouraging feature in our local politics.
