The P.3LZ. &, A.R.M. Co.'s s.s. Egmont arrived in the roadstead on Saturday evening, at four o'clock. She left Wellington on the 27th, and arrived off Greymouth on the 29th, und after being tendered, came on to this port. She was to have left yesterday morning ; but iii consequence of the heavy surf, combined with the bad state of the bar, the tender was unable to go out, so that we have had no communication with her. Should the fresh and surf go down, it is probable that tho Kginont will be tendered ou this morning's tide.

We regret to state that the attempt to blow up the wreck Frederick proved abortive, the more so as the freshet would have greatly assisted by carrying away the pieces. On Saturday evening Mr Button, with his battery, Mr Frew, and .-everal other gentlemen, went across the river with Captain Turnbull in the harbor boat. After connecting the wires with the battery, it was found that the powder could not be ignited. Several other attempts were made without avail, and the conclusion arrived at was that the water had got through the tin cases, and so caused the failure. Yesterday Captain Turnbull, with tho harbor boat's crew, took up the charge and found it quite dry. It is inferred from that that the fault was in the battery. We hope the next attempt will bo successful, and that we will be rid of an obstruction to the navigation of the port. The three-masted schooner Lady Dai'ling, from Melbourne, passed the port yesterday afternoon on her way to Greymouth. By the " Grey Argus " we see that the brigantine Northern Light, bound to Melbourne, was towed to sea by the Despatch, on Friday afternoon. We perceive by the shipping telegrams that the s.s. Gothenburg arrived at Port Chalmers on Saturday morning. She is announced to be despatched from this port for Melbourne direct, forwarding psascngura { to Queensland on Saturday next, the sth of September. The schooner Jane Anderson, from Dunedin, sailed into the roadstead yesterday morning ; but in consequence of the bad weather, would not trust to her anchor, and kept standing off and ou under cm 7; is tho whole day. The schooner Ifora, from Lyttelton, came into the roadstead on Saturday, and immediately dropped anchor. The whole of the fleet were riding easily at their anchors when night came on yesterday.
