SYDNEY.

The Welcome, brig, from Launceston to Newcastle, N.S.W., put into Sydney, having been obliged to cut away her masts during the southerly gales. An extraordinary phenomenon occurred at Sydney on the morning of August 15. A wave entered the harbor, and the water rose repeatedly four feet, subsiding with great rapidity. The steam ferry boat was dragged from the wharf, snapping three warps and doing other damage. One of the steamers in the harbor was completely stopped and turned violently round. The wave also entered Newcastle harbor, and did considerable damage to the shipping. Several vessels broke from their moorings at the coal wharf. At 11.30 a.m., the water receded suddenly five feet, leaving the tugs Warhawk and Rapid stranded. A heavy southerly gale has been experienced on the coast. In Newcastle harbor the Hydra, Wallaroo, and Sir W. Wallace, fouled and drifted on to the Sydney Griffiths, doing damage to the extent of £1000.

The Catholic authorities at Sydney decline retaining the donation to the Cathedral fund made by a swindling Count who, recently paid that city a visit. The Queensland Government have dispatched troopers to Townsville to arrest him should his yacht touch there. The Government House at Sydney .was entered by burglars, but the thieves only got a quantity of cutlery. The Prince of Wales Theatre was reopened on the 17th instant, with great success.

No Surrender has been scratched for oil his Sydney engagements. The Barb has also been scratched for the Sydney Handicap. The steamer Black Swan, from Maryborough, brought 4300 ounces of gold, The North Star has arrived at Sydney from California, with 600 tons of breadstuffs.

The wool sales were well attended, scoured brought 18d to 20d ; sheepskins, a farthing advance on former prices. Sales of Californian flour have been made at £17. The market is firm.

At an auction of sugars the following prices were realised: — Fine crystals, £40 to £40 15s ; counters, £30 to £38.

An analysis has been made of Cinnabar ore from Eylstone. It yields 85 per cent, of quicksilver.
