THE "EVENING STAR" AND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL.

TO THE EDITOB OB THE WEST COAST TIMES Sib — I was rather surprised, when reading the local column of your evening contemporary the " Star," on Saturday last, in which the editor says he regrets that the gentlemen of the press have to sit in the Court from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. "every day" taking down exposures of the "little games of the children of Israel." Now, Sir, I think that the remarks of your evening contemporary are quite uncalled-for. The first thing I wish to say is, that if the "Evening Star" would confine itself to the truth it would give much more credit to the learned editor of that paper ; and if your contemporary would look over the records of the January sittings under the Debtors' and Creditors' Act, he will, I have no doubt, find that some cases in that month were" much worse than the case he refers to, viz., Jacobs v. Marks, which occupied the Court about one day, and not, as your contemporary says, " every* day ;" but, Mr Editor, I repeat, as every soundthinking man would, that the remarks of your contemporary were quite uncalledfor, and it shows a want of principle on the part of the editor to make an attack on so respectable a class of people for the delinquency of one man. And now, Sir, I appeal to you and your readers to read the criminal statistics of this or any otherplace, and you will find that the Jews, in proportion to their number, wherever they reside, fall far short in their numbers of light criminals ; whilst heavy crimes, such as murder, incendiarism, &c, are almost unheard-of amongst them ; and, furthermore, it is generally acknowledged that the Jews as a nation are sober, prudent, quiet, charitable, industrious, good neighbors and loyal citizens; and, under these circumstances, Mr Editor, I shall feel greatly obliged to your evening contemporary by informing the public what he means by taking down the exposures of "the little games of the children of Israel." Trusting that you, will give this letter publicity in your valuable columns, I am, &c, A. Sattndebs. Tancred-street, Hokitika. [We have received two other letters on this subject, couched in nearly similar terms, from members of the Jewish persuasion.—Ed. W.C T.]
