Onr slipping intelligence to-day i 3 rather meagre, the business of yesterday being confined to the departure of the two steamers, the Kennedy and Bruce. They left in the order we have mentioned them, the Kennedy bound to Nelson via Greymouth and Buller, the Bruce to Fox's and Buller. The former vessel took away twenty-five passangers, and a large cargo, part original and part shipped here for Greymouth. The Bruce was lightly laden, trade with the Nelson goldfields ports having much fallen off of late. A rush back from those diggings is confidently anticipated, and that during the summer months the overflow of population will be to the far south.

The s.s. William Miskin continues in the trade between Dunedin and JLyttelton, and we see by the Christchurch papers that she arrived there on the 14th, and was kid on to take excurtionist3 to Pigeon Bay on Monday last.

The brigantine Elizabeth Curie sailed from Dunedin for Greymouth on tho 11th instant. The Aurora schooner from this port arrived off Port Chalmers on the 12th.

The brigantine Io from Melbourne arrived at Greymouth on Monday last. She left Melbourne on the 30th ult.

The " Grey Argus" believes that the steamer Charles Edward is likely to be purchased by one of two steam boat firms in the Westland trade.

Under the direction of the Harbor Master a beacon with a flag attached has been fixed upon tho remnant of the old Gratitude's wreck left in the channel. Some doubt exists respecting its sizo, but it is believed that a section of one of tho fop sides, about forty feet long, alone remains. It lies flat upon tho bottom, and is gradually working deeper into the sand, no part being pcrceptable at low water, so wo are sanguine that it will soon cease to be an obstruction.

We are delighted to observe that the inroads of the surf upon tho North Spit have ceased, owing in a great measure to tho resistance offered by the rows of fascines which although partly uncovered maintain their position well, and now that the river is no longer diverted by the Gratitude, promise to promote the reformation of the Spit. Tho washing away has made strange revelations concerning the composition of the Spit, which seems to be pretty nearly made up of snags and sand in equal proportions, the snags evidently having been deposited there at no very distant date.
