HOKITIKA BENELOVENT FUND.

The following circular has been addressed to a large number of citizens by his Worship the Mayor :—: — Sib — Tour presence is earnestly requested at a meeting to be held at Osborne's Empire Hotel, this evening ut eight o'clock, for the purpose of promoting the establishment of a Hokitika Benevolent Fund, and making proper provision for its management and distribution. It is unnecessary to impress upon you the necessity that exists for tho establishment of such a provision for the relief of the many urgent cases that are constantly arising here, and for a response to the frequent appeals for temporary and casual aid. I may state for youv information, that the nett proceed! of the concert, recently given at the Supreme Court House, amounted to the sum of L 32 Os 6d, •which sum is now in the hands of the temporary treasurer. On the occasion of the concert, it was announced that a committee had been formed, consisting of Messrs Binney, Cosgrave, Rees, Procter and myself. The committee are desirous of placing the fund upon a permanent basis, and of forming a Benevolent Society, consisting of subscribers of one guinea annually, who shall be entitled to elect a Committee of Management and other necessary officers. As it is desirable that no time should be lost in forming this Society and making arrangements for properly dispensing the funds already in hand, and those to be herewith subscribed, it is hoped that at the first meeting to be held this evening, the election of a Treasurer and Committee may take place, and further operations arranged. Requesting the favor of your punctual attendance, I have the honor to be, sir, Your obedient servant, William Shaw, j Mayor, Hokitika, Monday, December 16.
