THE MA YOR AND THE "WEST COAST TIMES."

The following letter has been handed to us for publication : —

Hokitika, December 12, 1867. Rev. and Dear Sib— Eeferring to a letter of yours, which appeared in last evening's " Star," addressed "To the Editor of the West Coast Times, per favor of the • Evening Star,' " I beg you will allow me to correct an impression .which evidently pervades your mind, that I am the Editor of the West Coast Times. Not only am I not the Editor, but neither do I ever interfere in the slightest degree in the literary conduct of the paper, and I am not in the least entitled to any censure or praise that may attach to that gentleman. The letter signed " Hibernicus " I never saw until after the publication of it ; and I trust you will not believe that I ever insulted your religion, although you may, nevertheless, deem the editorial comments objectionable. Nothing would give me greater pain than for any religious feud to be excited in our midst. Happily I have been hitherto on the best of amity with all creeds, and I trust I shall continue so. Allow me also to add, that I was very much gratified at the kind manner in which you and the other clergymen met my suggestions, as to regulating the proper control of the Cemetery ; and I nad intended to say as much, had the meeting proposed to be held come off; and, unfortunately as it happened, I neither communicated the fact of my interview with the clergymen, nor the letter I had received from the Rev. Mr Harper, to the Editor, or most likely the comment on their absence whould not have been made by him. Yours respecfully. William Shaw. Eev. Mr M'Donough.
