VISIT OF THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH TO OTAGO.
The following correspondence as to His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, visiting Otago, which has passed between the Superintendent of Otago, and the Colonial Secretary, has been handed for publication to the " Otago Daily Times "—" — Province of Otago, N.Z., Superintendent's Office, Dunedin, Oct. 19, 1867. Sie — I have the honor to state that very general desire is being expressed throughout this Province that it should be honored with a visit of his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. I have therefore to request that you will be good enough to inform me- what probability there is of such being the case, and whether any portion of the LSOOO voted by the General Assembly is being reserved for the purpose. I have no doubt that, should the amount at the disposal of the General Government be insufficient, this Province will be happy to supplement it, or indeed, to make any arrangements which you may deem desirable, and may be pleasing to his Eoyal Highness. Having some thoughts of calling the Provincial Council together shortly, I shall be obliged by receiving a reply at your earliest convenience. I have, &c, James Macandbew, Superintendent. The Hon. the Colonial Secretary, Wellington. Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, fcsth Oct., 1867. Sie — I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Honor's letter, No. 8116, of the 19th instant, and to state that the Government has no information with respect to the intended visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to New Zealand, beyond what is conveyed in the despatches from the Secretary of State, numbered and dated respectively No 19 of the Ist of May, and 39 of the 2Gth of June hist, and presented during the recent session to the Legislature, which only state generally that His Eoyal' Highness will only visit Auckland and Wellington. Should it be found, on the arrival of Mis Royal Highness, that his other engagements would admit it, he will be advised to visit the principal settlements, mcluding Otago, in the Southern Island. UnM more is known of the probable stay which His Eojal Highness will make in this Colony, and whether he will be able to travel through the country, and how many places he will visit, it is impossible to state how the funds voted for his recep- . tion will be available for expenditure Si any one place. I have, &c, IT- TT *i a E - W - STAFFOBD. Mis Honor the Superintendent, Otago.
