CRICKET.

On Saturday last, the Hokitika Cricket Club commenced its matches for the season by a contest between eleven of the legal profession with eleven of the district. It would at first sight appear somewhat a bold step for one profession to challenge and play tipon equal terms all the other portions of the community, but the result has warranted the confidence displayed by the representatives of the law. Indeed the law only played eight men against the eleven of the other side, but yet it will be seen they managed to win in one innings, with nearly twenty runs +o spare. It was a complaint made by the District that the Law twisted too much. However, very few aj^eals on the parfc of the Law were dismissed, aud bail was often taken from the opposing side. The District was soon committed for trial, and soon also discharged, the verdict being — " Served 'em rif.ht." It was paid of the highest scorer on the side of the District, "He can block-sonic," but as MessrsPocock and Rees demurred to the declaration, the demurrer was allowed. The District moved for a now trial, which will be argued after the match with Greymouth ha» taken place. The following is the score : —
