RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before G. G. FitzGerald, Esq., R.M.) SaTUUDAY, NOA r EMBEB 2. DfiTJsrcEX ness. — Lanyon Scoresby, James Word, and John Jones were severally fined 10s, with the usual alternative. Indecency. — Jobn Jones and James Campbell were each fined L 2 or in default of payment to bo imprisoned for four days. Vageancy. — Lanyon Scoresby was charged under section 11, clause 3, with beiug an habitual drunkard. He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labor. James Campbell was charged under clause 11. section 1, with having no visible lawful means of support. Detective Browne was called and deposed that he had known the prisoner for the last three months. He never did any work, but wandered about the streets and " loafed" about public houses for drink. The detective had several times cautioned him. Constable O'Callaghan deposed to having known the prisoner both at Ross and Hokitika. He never knew him to do any work. He had on two or three occasions asked witness to lend him a few shillings. Sergeaut Sugrue deposed to having known the prisoner at Ross. gWitness obtained employment for him, but he did not remain at work. The prisoner stated that he had had a good claim on Jones. He had lately endeavoured to obtain employm?m?int j b^r ot succ eeded. Prisoner called Mr Miller, who stated that he knew prisoner in Dunedin as a hardworking man. He had lately applied to him tor work. Prisoner was remanded till the 4th inst., to enable him to subpoena witnesses. Lunacy. ■- Johannah Shcehan was charged with being of unsound mind. The evidence of Charles Bond and Mrs A Smger was taken.
