SALE OF TOWN LANDS IN HOKITIKA.
The Hon John Hall, writing to one of the late members for Hokitika in the Provincial Council of Canterbury, under date Wellington, 2nd October, 1867, says : — " I send you a copy of the Hokitika &c. Town Lands Bill, which grants I think all which the section occupiers, on whose behalf you wrote to me, desire, or can reasonably ask. It will pass through the House of Representatives, and will also, I hope, pass the ordeal of the Upper House." 1 The following is a copy of the Bill referred to : — A Bill intituled " Tho HoMtUca, Greymouth, and Okarita Town Lands Bill." ' Whereas doubts have arisen as to the validity of certain sales that have been made of waste lands of the Crown in the town of Hokitika, in the Province of Canterbury, And whereas it is expedient that such sales should be validated, and that further provision should be made for the sale of lands in the towns of Hokitika, Greymouth and Okarita in the said Province. Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled and by the authority of the same as follows :—: — 1. The short title of this Act shall be " The Hokitika, Greymouth, and Okarita Town Lands Act, 1867." 2. All Crown Grants and licenses to occupy heretofore issued and all Crown Grants to be issued in pursuance of any license to occupy heretofore issned of any landsinthetownof Hokitika are hereby declared to bo as valid and ineffectual in all j respects as if tho lands in respect of which such grants or licenses have been or may be issued had boon lawfully sold in accordance with the regulations in force in the said Province of Canterbury for the sale and disposal of town lands in tho said Province. 3. The Superintendent of the Province of Canterbury shall cause the buildings" or other improvements erected or situated upon any land within the said towns of Hokitika, Groymouth and Okarita to bo assessed when- such land shall be offered for sale, and tho amount of the valuation shall bo added to the upset price of such land, and paid to the occupant in the event of any other person becoming tho purchaser thereof. Provided that such land shall be occupied at the time of the passing of this Act, and shall then have upon it buildings or improvements of tho value of twenty-five pounds at the least, and that the occupant shall either himself have erected, or made or caused to bo erected, or made the buildings or improvements on the land occupied by him, or shall be the representative or assign of the person who has erected, or made, or caused to bo erected, or made such buildings or improvements. '
