THE BREAD QUESTION.

TO THE EDITOR OF IH"E WEST COA3I TIMES.

Sib — Having read from time to time the complaints of the " Father of a Family," upon weights, and measures, and dishonest tradesmen, a few remarks from the bakers on the o,dium he would attempt to cast -upon their character in genera!, will not I hope be out of place. It is well known amongst the bakers, and the public generally, that fancy bread as a rule never is the standard weight, for this simple reason, that there is a deal more labor and time attached to the making of a fancy loaf, then what there is to a plain four-pound loaf. If "Father of a Family" had asked any baker for a four-pound plain loaf, he would, I am 9ure, have got it full weight — within an ounce, over or under. Having explained this, Paterfamilies will find that he has been defrauded nothing. At the present reasonable price of bread, there is little to complain of with regard to the bakers. The men have got wives and children, as well as " Paterfemilics," to keep, and the remuneration they receive at the present {>rice of bread in Hokitika, for their abor is extremely small. Indeed, if " Paterfamilies " don't want the price of breat at Is 6d, he might as well let the bakers alone, until he gets hold of a better foundation for complaint, than what he has at present. I am, James Reid, Baker. Stafford^Town, Waimea.
