Gentlemen, — I feel much pleasure in complying with your request to stand my canditure as a member of the new Council. If elected it shall be my utmost endear vor to serve your interests to the^est of my ability. I propose to take, an early opportunity before the election to state to you the policy I shall propose to pursue in the conduct of the business of the Council. f I am, obediently, James R. Andeesok. Hokitika, October 3. 10577 TO THE RATEPAYERS OF HOKITIKA. /""I ENTLEMEN— At the solicitation of many of the Ratepayers in this town, I consent to allow myself to be nominated as a candidate for a seat in the Municipal Conncil. Several gentlemen have offered to get up a requisition for me, which I declined, as unnecessary. My connection with the late Improvement Committee and other matters affecting the best interests of the town tend to show my desire and earnestness to promote and support any measure, having for its object the advancement and prosperity of the town at large. I am in favor of such retrenchments and reforms in carrying on the business of the Council so as not to mar its general officiency in carrying out the wishes of the ratepayers, and promoting the welfare of the Town both in a sanitary and commercial point of view. I would be for keeping a sharp eye not only on the expenditure but on the receipt of all rates and other monies passing through the hands of the Council. I am opposed to giving all the public works to one contractor if other contractors equally good could be obtained to do the work in separate divisions for less money, and I certainly would object to any more gravel being removed from the beach opposite the township. The question of drainage requires a considerable, amount of consideration. I find the last Council has not done much towards it. There are many other questions of great importance which I shall not touch upon here, except the necessity . of lovying more moderate rates, and getting more real and useful work done for our money than hitherto. Should you do me the honor of electing me, I will at all times endeavor to the best of my ability to advance the best interests, of not only a portion, but the whole of the Town of Hokitika. I am, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, 10W« THOS. MUNEO,
