SEPAEATION PETITION.

We have been furnished for publication with a copy of the following letter from the Premier addressed to the President and Yicc-President of the Separation League : — Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, September 27, 18G7. Gentlemen — I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 10th instant, transmitting a petition to the House of Representatives from 2600 electors and other inhabitants of the district of Westland, praying that their district may be created a separate Province, and to state that I have had great pleasure in presenting that petition. A similar petition has been presented by the Hon. Major Eichardson to the Legislative Council. It i= a matter of regret that these petitions arrived at such a late period of the Session, as to afford but little time for the consideration of so important a question as was raised by them. Tho Government has, however, with an earnest desire to meet as far aa possible the just requirements of the District or' Westland introduced a Bill, a copy of which is enclosed, providing for the temporary local government of that district until furthei- cjpsideration can be given to the subject, with i f riew to legislation in a future Session.' I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Your most obedient servant, E. W. Staitobd. Messrs. South and Shaw, Hokitika.
