RUMOR RELATIVE TO MRS. QUADRI.

TO THE EDITOE 01? THE WEST COAST TIME 3. Sie — I find that a rumor has been current about town for the last fortnight, that Mrs Quadri, who sailed for England, via Panama, on the Bth August last, died on the passage from Wellington to Panama. In order to quell the uneasiness that her friends may feel in consequence of this rumor; I desire to point out the fact'that it was impossible, even had she died, for any one in New Zealand to know of her death, until the arrival of the next Panama mail, which will be due in Wellington on tho 22nd inst. Leaving Wellington on the Bth August, she would be due in Panama on the sth September. The next mail ship from Panama after her arrival there would leave on tho 24th September, and will arrive in Wellington about tho 22nd inst. Until the latter date, no news of Mrs Quadi, or the Rakaia — in which she sailed — can possibly reach New Zealand. We have therefore as much right to presume that Mrs Quadri is in the land of the living, as we have that the captain and crew of the steamship in which she sailed, are still in existence. The rumor has not the shadow of ft foundation ; and probably emanates from tho diseased brain of some person or persons not well-disposed to tho lady alleged to be deceased. I am, &c, JoflN WjWSB. Powerful Appeal. — The following powerful", elegant, and classic appeal was made in a court of justice somewhere in the wept, by one of the learned heads of the bar : — " Gentlemen of the jury, do you think my client, who lives in a pleasant valley, where the land is rich, and the soil is fertile, would be guilty of stealing eleven little skeins of cottoa ? 1 think not, I reckon not, I calculate nofcr and I guess, gentlemen of the jury, that yois had better bring nay client in not guilty, for if you convict him, ho and his brother John will liok the whole of you."
