CIVIL SERVANTS.
TO THE EDITOE OF THE WEST COAST TIME'S.
Sib — In the majority of instances the gentlemen connected with the Civil Service of the Crown pay every, attention to the enquiries of our heavily taxed population. But the exception proves the rule in_ the person of the present official reigning in the outer office, on the door of "which is written the word " Commissioner." To-day I had occasion on behalf of a miner — (one of the bone and sinew) — to lodge an application, involving on his part, a payment of L4O to the Government for a license and respectfully presented it to the official referred to. (i do not know him; sufficient it is to say he is not the head of his department.) When he after glancing most superciliously at the superscription, replied, "This has nothing to do with us— take it away. I know nothing about it, The words
were so insultingly emphasised, that I had difficulty in keeping my temper. Controlling myself I said "I expected civility and wasreferrcdin tones, equally arrogant, tothe Warden's Clerk, Mr Tennant, whom I found immersed in business. t It was pleasant to meet him, and. receive irom him the information requested— civility costs nothing, but it goes a long way: so says the old proverb. Young men not acquainted with the genial manners of Australians, and the universal bon Tiommie which obtains amongst them, had better take a few voyages, do a little shepherding, digging, &c, and by the time they have starved out, been worth a few thousands, lost the thousands and starved again, they will appreciate civility and the liberality of a Government that pays for isolated incivility. Feed. Dick.
Her Majesty in council has been pleased to grant a charter of incorporation to the Poor Clergy Relief Society.
