The amount of import duty collected at the Cuitom House to-day was L 702 15s 9d. The following li>t of merchandise) cloared shows its distribution :—: —

We in f e at length enabled to note a marked contrast in activity in the import market compared with the business of the past few weeks — the larger fleet of ships having exchanged their position iv the roadstead for the wharf; the amount of tonnage of general merchandise made available at once is unprecedented in tho commercial history of our port, and will severely tax the bonds aud warehouses to find storage room. The auctioneers have for tho past two days been busy in placing pai-cels from ships side, and next week several cargoes will be offered ; stocks being generally light tho large influx i 3 not expected to effect market values very materially — thero being no apparent disposition to overpress tho market. Flour is a little easier, having been placed at Ll7 for Adelaide — that being tho figure now asked by holders — the major part of the goods ex recent arrivals that have been brought into the market consist chiefly of cereals and produce ; oats realising 4s Id to 4s 3d ; bran, 2s to 2s 2d per bushel ; potatoes, L 6 to L 8 per ton. Some parcels of stout have changed hands at, for Byass', 12s 6d ; Blood's 13s per dozen. There has been no heavy transaction in wines or spirits. The amount collected for import duties during the week being L 23-19 13s Bd.
