The steamers Gothenburg and Egmont returned to the outer anchorage yesterday, from Greymouth. They will both, bar permitting, be dispatched for Melbourne to-day.

The schooner J. B. Russell, from Christchurch, arrived in the roadstead some time during Monday night.

We are informed by Captain Turnbull, who has received late advices from Okarita, that the bar there has vastly improved within the hut fortnight, and is now navigable to vessels of moderate burden.

The steamer Persevere ran into the river upon last night's tide, with a few tons of cargo from the Gothenburg, and reports the bar as lumpy and shallow, the greatest depth found being six feet. The Persevere accompanied the steamers Egmont and Gothenburg to Greymouth ou Moiiday night, and yesterday morning conveyed passengers and gold to each- tneuty passengers and three boxes of gold being transhipped to the latter vessel, and ten passengers and three boxes of gold to the Egniont. Captain Robertson reports two channels through tho Grey bar, both containing a fair depth of water ; but the heavy sea that ran at the Grey yesterday rendered then* navigation somewhat difficult. He also iuforms us that the rumors current in town yesterday concerning the Dispatch exaggerated the true facts of the case, as the Dispatch is not ashore outside the bar, but merely neaped in that part of the river known as Whitford's bight. She will float again in a day or two. The steamers William Miskiu and Nelson arrived at, Greymouth, from the Buller, "yesterday morning. The Persevere will lea\e the river this iGorning, with passengers and gold for the Egmont and Gothenburg.

Inward passenger-list per s.s. Egmont, from Dunedin and Bluff.— Saloon : Mrs Denniscn, Messrs Jones, Logic, Islop, Ross ; and thirty-six in the steerage for Hokitika, and fourteen for Greymouth. The s.s. Beatiful Star has n-iade another suecessfultrip from Westport to Wanganui, where she loaded up cattle and sheep, and returned to the Buller, completing the voyage in nine days. She landed sixty-two head of cattle, 320 sheep, and six pigs, in good condition. The Star left Westport for Dunedin on Monday ast.

The coasting steamer Bruce arrived from the Buller, via Fox's, yesterday, and entering the rher upon early morning tide, and found between five and sit feet of water on the bar. She commenced thetiip on Saturday last at four p.m., and, after tendering the steamers Claud Hamilton and Gothenburg, she ran the coast down to Fox's, attended by very thick weather and a stiff westerly breeze, her airival in Woodpecker Bay taking place about midnight. Found a nasty sea running, which prevented the shore boats putting oil', so she made no delay but pushed on to Westnorfc, and arrived ut the Buller bar at 7 a.m. on Sunday, against a very heavy fresh, which induced the Harbor Master to hoist the danger flag at the signal station. The Bruce, however, paiidled in after her usual approved fashion, and moored in the tier of steamers there lying alongside the bank. Next morning she discharged cargo, shipped passengers, and left for Fox'a, wheie she landed downward freight and received a few passengers on board, and at 10 p.m. put to sea ngain, arriving off Hokitika at 3 a.m. yesterday, and in the river ua above. She biings up fifteen cabin and seven steerage passengers fiom the Buller, and three passengers irom Fox's. Captain Kerley reportß that the pteamers Kennedy, Waipara, and Murray, were en tb» 'wtu »t Wfftporf fer MstihW, &ad

likely to fill up with passengers and cargo. The steamer Beautiful Star left Westport on Monday morning for Dunedin. The Bruce sails this morning for Buller and Mokihinui.
