TO THE EDITOR OF THE WEST COAST TIMES
Sib — Hearing reports from various sources about the p.s. Huntress beating the renowned p.B. Bruce, I beg, through the medium of your columns, to contradict such erroneous assertions, and state the facts. On starting from the s.s. Kecra, which was at anchor in the roadstead, off Hokitika, the Bruce eased steam to allow the Huntress to come up, and even allowed the latter to pass before the Bruce's throttle valve was opened and full speed attained, when the Bruce gradually drew ahead, increasing the distance to Greymouth. Whoever would presume to compare the two vessels upon an equality must be laboring under some mental derangement, or optical delusion, and their capabilities of judging of marine architecture, may be rated as very inferior. I am, &c, Fair Plat.
