Election Notices. decided that Separation is necessary, in consequence of the treatment of thisDistrict by the Superintendent and his Executive having seriously retarded its progress and development, it is most essential at the present juncture of political feeling that the welfare of this portion of the Province should not be intrusted to a gentleman whose interests are already identical with those of a party entirely inimical, to the prosperity of the West Coast, and; therefore, it is apparent that an independent candidate should be elected, and not a nominee of the present Executive. That the recent appointment of Goldfields Secretary as a member of Executive is an unconstitutional and illegal one, and is in direct opposition to the votes of a majority of the Provincial Council as expressed in division upon two distinct occasions in the last session, when the members of the Executive voted against the appointment of a responsible Goldfields Secretary having a seat in the Council, and therefore it is not likely that this appointment can be sanctioned by the Provincial Council at its next sittings. On the question of Separation I am still — notwithstanding the report of some persons to the contrary — as much in favor of it as ever, and consider that all those who have the better government of this District at heart should protest against the way in which the appointment of Goldfields Secretary has been made, and should endeavor, as long as we are obliged .to remain attached to Canterbury, to Strengthen the already too small force of representatives by the appointment of a member .with independent principles, and free from the controlling influences of the East Coast. ; Having already devoted some time and money in the^ cause of Westland in the Provincial Council, I am still willing to ' devote a portion ofmy time and energies for furtherance of those measures necessary for the welfare of the District. I therefore trust that the velectors will use every fair means in their power to protest against the course recently taken by the present Executive.
