MELBOUKNE. Wednesday, August 14. Advices have been received from Paris to the effect that Victoria obtained no gold medal at the Exhibition, the onlyawards being two silver and twenty-two bronze medals, and fifteen honorable mentions. South Australia procured one gold, one silver, and twelve bronze medals and five honorable mentions, against one gold, two silver, and sixteen bronze medals, and sixteen honorable mentions for New South Wales. A scheme for the conveyance of mails via the Cape of Good Hope (not Burstall's scheme) was submitted to the Government of this colony yesterday. The proposed contract is for ten years, at an annual subsidy of L 60,000. It is also stated that the mails shall be conveyed from port to port in forty-two days, a substantial guarantee being offered for the due performance of the service. The Legislative Council has read the Appropriation Act a first time, and the second reading has been fixed for Tuesday. All the members have been invited by circular to attend. Thursday, August 15. Five ships of war are ordered to meet the Galatea at Adelaide, namely, the Challenger, 32 guns; the Charybdis, 21 guns ; the Brisk, 16 guns ; the Falcon, 10 guns ; and the Serago, 6 guns. Much satisfaction is expressed by the country papers at the return of Mr Duffy. Private letters state that Sir Charles Darling is unwell. The Whitworth rifles for the Intercolonial Match are expected in the Star of Peace in a fortnight. Agricultural prospects are promising. The following horses have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup : — Barb, Warwick, Bylong, Lady Kingston, Bulgimbar, Tamworth, Pitsford, Beatrice, Apparition, Chancellor, Miss Fisher, Kingfisher, Mariner's Daughter, lona, Cartouch, Westbury, Balmoral, Australia, and Silvia. There is a fair demand for Victorian flour at Lll 5s ; and wheat at 4s 9d ; 2000 bushels malt sold at 8s 6d ; 300 chests tea, at Is 5d to Is 7d ; there is little doing in spirits. At a meeting of the creditors of Wocdville, Jarrett, and Co. the liabilities were stated to be L 15,000 and the assets L 15,300, the chief asset being the steamer Souchays, valued at L 12.000. It was resolved to assign the estate. Hoss and Service have been appointed trustees. Friday, August 16. The odds against the horses for the Melbourne Cup are not much altered, and very little has been done. Saturday, August 17. The ship White Rose cleared at the Customs to day, for London. She takes, besides other cargo, 300 tons of breadstuffs. Tonnage in this port is very scarce at present. Business is dull and little doing. Saturday, 6 p.m. It is rutaored that the Banks have brought some influence to bear on the Upper House, to induce that Chamber to pass the Appropriation Bill under protest, as a quarter of a million sterling is locked up which affects the Banking Corporations.
