THE CORONATION AT BUDAPESTH.
Another great historical event has signalised the month. Francis Joseph of Austria was crowned King of Hungary, on the Bth instant, with a gorgeousness of ceremonial unknown to the west. As a sign and seal of tbe reconciliation which has at length been effected between the Kaiser and his high-spirited subjects, the event is one of happiest augury. The matchless pageant will be found described in the " Times,'' by Dr Russell's graphic pen. The reception of King and Queen appears to have been enthusiastic and hearty iv the extreme. A little knot of sour-souled Radicals made a contemptible demonstration by wearing mourning dresses, and holding an open air funeral service outside Buda for the lost independence of Hungary. After the coronation, the new Sovereign enthroned himself more securely in the hearts of his subjects by publishing' a graceful act of oblivion for all past political offences; while the usual coronation gifts of the nation to the King and Queen were dedicated to deeds of mercy. Meanwhile Austria is pressing on in the path of constitutional reform. Baron Beust has brought in bills for establishing Ministerial responsibility, and trial by jury in criminal cases.
An outbreak of fanatical persecution of the Jews in Roumania, encouraged by the Minister of the Interior, has led to indignant remonstrances from the French and English Governments.
