RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Mokdat, July 22. (Before G. G-. FitzGerald, Esq., E.M.)

Drunk and Disorderly. — Alexander Farron and Bernard Suigh were charged with this offence. The former was fined 10s, or, in default, to be imprisoned for twenty-four hours, and the latter discharged. Vag-rakct. — Peter Owen was charged by Detective Dyer, under Section 11., Clause 1., with having no visible lawful moans of support. — Mr Harvey appeared for the prisoner. — Detective Dyer deposed to having known the prisoner for the last twelve months. Prisoner had for somo time past lived in a brothel with a well-known prostitute, Mary Ann Webb. Witness having been informed that a miner had been robbed in the brothel of three fivepound notes, he proceeded to Mary Ann Webb's house. He enquired of the woman whether she had any monoy on her, when prisoner replied that ho kept her money. The 'prisoner stated that he was employed as sorvaut to the prostitute, and was paid at the rate of Ll per week. — Detective Brown deposed to having known prisoner for the last eight months, aud corroborated the former witness's evidence as to the manner in which the prisoner obtained a livelihood. He also was well acquainted ' with the female's character. He had known her in Little Bourke street (four years ago) as " Chinaman's Mary Ann."— -Mr Harvey contended that it had been distinctly shown that the prisoner had means of support. He was cook to Miss Webb, and as such received Ll per week. Mr Harvoy called G-corge Kuapp, who frankly admitted that he was a frequent visitor at Miss Webb's. He had been informed that the prisoner was paid Ll a week, iv his capacity as cook to the establishment.— His Worship remanded the prisoner till the 23rd instant.

Li'SACY. — Edward Davis, on remand from the 12th iiißtaut, charged with being of uuaouud mind, was committed t> the Lunatic Asylum at, Hokitiku, on the medical evidence of Drs. Berndt aud Ryley. Bkeacu or the Polici: Okdikance.—William Eussel and Israel Pollock were charged by the police with obstructing the thoroughfare, viz., the aca beach, by erecting buildings thereon. They were liucd L 2 each, with costs. — An information laid by the police agaiust Madame Bertha, for neglecting to keep her chimney clean, ivas adjourned, at the request of the police, till Friday noxt. Using Abusive Lakguage.— G-corgc Holmes was charged on the information of Edward Kirwan, with using " abusivo and insulting language towards him (on tho 16th), calculated to provoke a breach of the peace. It appeared that the defendant was indebted to plaintiff, and on his (defendant) applying to Kirwan for the money, on the day in question, he (Kirwan) refused to pay hici, whereupon Holmes called him "a d d moan man." His worship remarked that he no business to make use of such language. If ho had a claim against Kirwan, he had his remedy, and fined liiin 10s. with costs. ASSAULT..— 3Tairey_ Matson - wa*^_ charged with assaulting Henry Franklin on the 18th instant. Mr Harvey for the complainant; Mr South for the defendant. For tho complainant it was stated that, on Thursday evening last, the complainant, accompanied by his mate, went to the Shakespeare Hotel. They went into the dancing room, and joined in the" dancing. Complainant happened to tread accidentally on the toe of another gentleman, who resented the accident by striking him on the neck. The complainant followed him, but was overtaken by the landlord (defendant), who took hold of him and Btruck him several blows on the face. For the defendant it was denied that he hsul struck complainant. It appeared that the complainant, who was under the influence of liquor, behaved himself in rather a disorderly manner, inasmuch as he rushed about the room offering to fight any man in the room for LlO. The landlord interfered for the purpose of turning complainant out, and was struck in the mouth -by him . His Worship dismissed the information. The Court was then adjourned till eleven o'clock next day.
