This Company is being formed for the purpose of laying a tramway from Ross to Hokitika, for the conveyance of passengers and goods between these and the intermediate plar-.es. The projectors of this line have completed nearly a mile of their line from Ross — which is the most difficult and expensive portion of the whole line — and are now in full work delivering building and mining materials in large quantities at that place. They offer to the public this splendid investment, which must when completed to the South Spit stand second culations will be enormous. From calculations carefully made the present pa?senger and goods traffic between Hokitika and Ross is estimated at about seventy-five tons of goods and four hundred passengers per week. This, at L 5 per ton, will give L 375 weekly, and placing the passenger traffic at 10s per head, this will produce L2OO more. This estimate may be fairly placed at the lowest, as the present cost of carriage is LlO I per ton, and it may be reasonably anticipated that the growing importance of this district will greatly increase the traffic. Other sources of revenue will arise from the carriage of mails, parcels, &c, and the demand for mining and building timber, to be delivered by this line, will be very large, as the part now in work runs through a dense forest of timber, and i 9 the only source of supply to the diggings. The present line, by being extended about six chains, can deliver firewood, mining timber, and other goods, on the claims of the companies that are now erecting powerful machinery for working the deep leads, and the revenue from that alone will form a considerable item. The favorable prospects of this Company must be patent to all that are in any way acquainted with the Totara district. The present works could be completed to the Beach at a cost of L6OO, and it would then command the whole passenger and goods traffic, as the road used for that distance has fifteen river crossings, and is very dangerous. The revenue from this source would very soon repay the cost of its construction. The works could also be commenced from the South Spit to the Lagoon, and in a very short time completed and opened for traffic, passengers, &c. Goods could then be booked through to Ross by taking advantage of the Lagoon till the space between should be finished : the only expensive piece of work being the bridge over the Totara, and that would very soon repay the cost of erection by tolls. There is also the advantage of the Donoghue's traffic, and all other diggings lying south of Ross, Avhich shows the advantages thi3 Company has over any other, as no competition can present itself by water. The whole distance to Hokitika can be completed in three months, at the cost of LSOOO, including stations, offices, &c, but as the line will be paying as it progresses probably not more than onehalf the capital wili be called up. The promoters offer to the Company their interest for tho sum of LISOO, on the following terms :—L4OO: — L4OO cash ; balance in 733 shares, half paid up. As soon as two-thirds of the shares are allotted a meeting will be called to adopt deed of association, elect officers, &c. Applications for shares to be made in the accompanying form.
