We understand that an enquiry into tho 'causes which led to the wreck of the Ballarat will be held by the Collector of Customs to-day. The entrance to the river is undergoing considerable change, as during the past few days the southern channel has gradually contracted, and is now but little more than a mere gutway. This has diverted the bulk of the outflow through the north channel, thereby materially improving it, by adding force to the stream, which is thus enabled to overcome the Burf, and tnkc a straight course through the bar. The break in the North Spit, separating tho bank upou which the remains of tho old Ballarat are lying from tho main beach, is fast closing up, so that it seems almost a certainty that ere long the entire J>ody of the river vrator will be confined to the one outlet, Tbjs -was worked by the
! passengers and mails from- the F.gmont, and again crowed the bar viith v return load of pasH'ngers to that vcb-n-1. She then picked up the Jaue Elkin, which had in the meantime lightered tho Ejpnont of some twenty tons of cargo, and made for tho river. Tlie captain reports eleven feet of water in thu channel at- high tide. A walk to the beucii was alone needed to convey assurances of the extreme smoothness of the sea, which broke upon the shore in gentle ripples that an outrigger skiff might have ridden over in safety. To the surprise of everyone tho p.s. Bruce returned tp port yesterday morning at five o'clock, having made the trip to and from Fox's River iv sixteen hours. She left the .wharf at one p.m. on Wediiesdny, and anchored in Woodpecker Bay at 7 p.m., having been just six hours over tho run, thus sailing at the rate of nearly ten knots an hour. She landed her passengers and get rid of an awkward cargo consisting of sheep, horses, and general merchandise by 9.30 p.m., and then turned her head southward and steered for nokitika, arriving as above. Throughout tho trip most beautiful weather prevailed. The Bruoe left again yesterday afternoon for Okarita.
Tho P.N.Z. & A R.M. Company's s.s. Egmont, J. V. Hall, jun , commander, left Wellington at 9.40 a.m. on the 10th, and arrived oli' the Boulder Bank tho ?tune eveninsr, but too late for tide. Next morning the ran alongside the hulk and coulc.l, and Ihi-n steamed up to the wharf and tlisihargod 15 tons of cargo, and sailed for Hokitika at noon the same day, arriving in the road-Ua I at an early hour yesterday morning. She experienced most lovely weather on tho passage, and hove to off the Buller river, and sent a boat in«hoio to take soundings. The Egmont brought 20 tons of cargo and 33 passengers. She reports that the Rakaia sailed for Panama at 7.30 p.m. on the Bth inst wilh 20 passengers, and that the s.s. Tararua arrived in Wellington harbor at 5 p.m. the same evening from Sydney, which port she left on the 2nd inst. Tho passage across proved most stormy, as she was hove to for 36 hours in a heavy NE. gale. The Ejimont sighted a full rigged ship in Cook's Straits, supposed to be the Countess of Kintore, from Nelson to Port Underwood.
The great transport ship Jumna, built by Messrs Palmer, at Jarrow-on-the-Tyne, made a beautiful launch recently, and was towed and moored safely in the Tyne Dock. The Jumna's length is 360 feet between perpendiculars ; extreme, 370 feet H inches ; 49 feet beam ; depth moukled. 41 feet 11 inches j registered tonnage, 4073 25 94, by displactment upwards of 6000 tons. Her engines will be of 700-horsc power, nominal. The hull is divided into 20 compartments ; each one is watertight, so that should any accident occur to one portion of the ves«el no risk will be incurred to the whole. The whole of the interior of the fhip, save those portions necessarily set apart for machinery and the working tackle, has begs designed and arranged for the accoauno lation of army officers, troops, passengers, seamen, &c. Each suite of compartments is separale and independent of the other : yet each is comprehended in one plan of ventilation, so from one end of the huge ship to the other, and from the. lower deck to the poop, a constant supply of fresh ah* is obtained. To provide sleeping accommodation for the troops and seamen tho roofs of the various decks are so arranged that hammocks can be sluns from them. The poop and forecastle will be connected by three bridges, one on each side of the vessel, and the usual bridge above the centre of the upper deck. The steering apparatus and capstans will be of a very strong and complete description. The launch of this noble vessel, notwithstanding the unfavorable state of the weather, was witnessed by a great concourse of spectators. — " Home News," Oct. 2.
The iron h'oopship Scrapis, 4173 tons, and 700-horse power, intended for the transport of troops to and from India, was launched on September 26 from the yard of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company, at Blackball. Her length between perpendiculars is 360 feet ; extreme breadth, 49 feet : and depth, 31 feet. Viscountess Cranbournc named the sliip, and the vessel went off in the ir.os ! successfid manner. There was a large concourse of spectators, and the band of the Royal Marines was in attendance. — Ibid.
