The arrival of the Alluunbra yesterday morning in time for the first tide was taken advantage of b) r the Yarra, which ran outside a little after daylight and transhipped from her 170 passengers and tho mails. These she landed with despatch, and then recrossed the bar and returned on tho first of tho next flood with 250 sheep, and, having received on board passiJngei's and mails for the Albion, again left the river. After ridding herself of this freight she took in, by way of oxchangc, 10 tons of cargo from the Albion, and then steamed alongside the Alhambra and received in addition 15 tons of luggage. With this load she made for the river, and gained the wharf safely, thus terminating a really good day's woi-k. The Challenge was not idle, as she towed out the ketch Jane Elkin, to lighter the Alhambra, and afterwards conveyed the barque Frederick to sea.
We are informed by the "Argus"' that the brigantincs Hector and Mary sailed from Melbourne for Hokitika on the 22nd ult. Also that the schooner Dancing Wave arrived there from this port on tho same day. The schooner Isabella sailed from Hobart Town for Hokitika on the 20th ult.
The schooner Moyne sailed through Port Philip heads on the 16th ult, with strong S.W. winds and cloudy weather. Made 11 capital run through the Straits, as she passed Deal Island at noon on tho following day. During the succeeding forty-eight hours she was favored by a steady S.W. breeze, but from, the 19th to the 23rd light variable weather prevailed. The wind then settled into north, and blew a hard gale, raising a high cross sea, which caused the schooner to labor heavily and ship much water over all. For two days she ran under low canvas, with the wind and sea on her quarter ; when, on the 25th, the weather changed, and hence to the land light breezes and smooth water prevailed. The New Zealand coast was sighted about Abut Head on the 27th, but owing to light wind 1 ? and a southerly set she was unable to reach the roadstead until the 29th, and towed over the bar astern of the Yarra tho following afternoon. The Moyne brings a full general cargo.
The schooner* Crest of the Wave and Christina Thompson cleared out at tho Melbourne Custom House for Hokitika on the 20th nil. ;
the Mary Stewart for Greymouth on the 19th. At the date of our last advices from Melbourne, the three-masted schooner John Bidlock was then taking in cargo for this port, and was expected to pail in a day or two. The M.A. & N.Z. Co.'s s.s. Alhambra, John M'Leau, commander, left Sandridge Railway Pier at, 3 p.m. on the 24th ult., and after a fail* run of five days twelve hours — during which she experienced light westerly weather — sighted the Hokitika light at 2.30 a.ni. on tho 30th, and eame-to in the roadstead half an hour later. She brings 173 passengers, 65 tons of cargo, and 250 sheep for this port. The Alhambra sails on her return, direct to Melbourne, this day. By her we have received nlco of papers to the 2-ith ult., from which we have extracted largely. The p.s. Kelson, 'Captain Whitwell, left Nelson at 3 p.m. on the 29th, with light weather, but on nearing Spit End was met by a heavy breeze and sea from the N.W., -winch drove her into Totaranui for shelter. RemaiueJ there that night, and the weather hay-
ing moderated she sailed again next morning at 5 a.m., and readied tlie buller the following day at 4.m. There discharged ■•cargo and passengers, and left at 4 p.m., arriving off Hokitika at 4 am next day, and being a good time for tide, crossed the bar at once. She brings 16 head of cnttle. 60 sheep, 30 pigs, and a few tons of cargo. The Nelson sailed again at 3 a.m. this morning with a full cargo for Grey, Pakihi, and Buller. Two schooners are engaged to lighter the Alhambra. as it is determined that her departure shall not be delayed over to-day. The Jane Elkin went out j'esterday, to receive Hokitika goods, and 'at three o'clock this morning the Yarra towed out the Glengarry, which will tranship freight for Greymouth, and then leave in time to cross the Grey bar this afternoon.
We understand that the new tug steamer Dispatch will pay this port a visit to-morrow, as it is proposed to send her down with the hull of the old Ballarat, which will be coal laden. An opportunity to inspect this fine boat will thus be afforded the public. We regret, to state that the attempt made yesterday to re-launch the Maid of Erin from the North' Spit resulted in a failure, as her heel took the ground and she in some manner slipped off the ways, and will have to be relifted again.
