November 5. The Novelty has arrived from Auckland with about 180 men of the 14th Regiment. They were met at the railway station by a guard of honor foni the volunteers. The valuators of runs have returned from the Far North. The result of their labors is not yet known. Reports from the Far North state that the shearing is proceeding slowly, owing to the scarcity of shearers. Business is very dull. There is some euquiry for candles, without an improvement in price, lhe corn market is very quiet — wheat 4s to 4s Id ; flour is nominal. A sale of fifty tons country flour is reported at LlO per ton. The Government have accepted the tender of the Australian Steam Navigation Company to supply a steamer to proceed to the northern territory and back. The cutter Firefly, wool laden, went ashore in Anxious Bay during the heavy gale which blew on Monday, the 22nd of October last. There were no lives lost. November 6. Corn sacks were sold to-day at 15s. Messrs Townsend, Botting, and Kaye sold by auction, to-day, the entire cargo of teas ex Frey, excepting a few lines of pekoes iv chests and boxes. Common congous sold at L 6 4s per chest, whilst best brought L 8 10s to L 8 12s, for half-chests ; common to best brought L 3 4s to L 4 4-!, and boxes from 23s to 26s 6d. Purchasers of over LIOOO worth were allowed four months bills. Very little interest is being taken in the municipal elections. A grand volunteer ball takes place on the 9th November. The officers of the 14th Regiment are to be there. Three men have been arrested, charged with being implicated in the late highway robberies. In the house of one of them a hollow table was found containing watches, jewellery, &c, some of which have been identified. Revolvers and masks were also found. Mr Victor, of Greenoclc, has declined to become a candidate for the Legislative Council. Wheat is scarce. Not a parcel can be bought under 4s 3d. The last sale of good country flour was LlO. November 7. Mr Bee, late relieving officer of the Destitute Asylum, has been appointed inspector of police, vice Peterswald, resigned. The appointment is likely to give general dissatisfaction. The Horticultural show to-day was a great success. The Peeress has arrived from Plymouth, with 312 Government immigrants. Steps are being taken fur the representatives of South Australia to compete with those of Victoria in the small-bore rifle matches. The Government has announced an intention to abolish the Marine Board. At the wool sale yesterday, greasy brought 8-} dto 9d. The corn market continues inanimate, without transactions or alteration in prices. Captain Rankine, M.P., and a member of the South Australian Volunteers, will probably visit Melbourne during the rifle matches of the Victorian Rifle Association. By last mail from England, Captain Vivian, commandant of the detachment of the 14th Regiment now in Adelaide, received his majority. November 8. The three men lately arrested, supposed to be part of Captain Thunderbolt's gang of highway robbers, were brought up at the Police-court this morning, and remanded till Monday. The evidence was very strong against them. It is rumored that the report of the police commission recommends the removal of Major Warburton to- some other department in the public service, and also the reduction of the duty of the members of tho force to six hours per day. There are no transactions in the corn market. Wheat is not over plentiful at 4s Id to 4s 2d. Flour, LlO to Lll ; sales of town flour at the latter price. Altogether, six youthful bushrangers have now been arrested. The Government have agreed to pay the A.S.N. Company (of Sydney) the sum of L2BOO to send one of their steame] s to the Northern Territory and back. Bran is quoted at 14d. Large sales of copper have been made at LB3 per ton.
