Mr White, Resident Magistrate at Mongonui, writes to ,the " New Zealand Herald," announcing the probable wreck of an Auckland vessel. He says : — " On Sunday last, the 14th October, twelve boxes of kauri gum were washed on shoie at Waimimia, about three miles from Ahipara, on the West Coast. On Tuesday last I visited the place, and saw on the beach what I supposed to be portions of a boat, and some boards of the galley of a vesseL On one of them ' Sylph Auckland ' was cvt — portions of a circular saw case with ' Aratapu Saw Mills ' painted on outside. The boxes of kauri gum were marked, some witli BC in diamond and 2 under, and others with A in diamond and 4 under on one end, weights, &c., on the other. On Wednesday a native arrived at Ahipara, from the North Cane, who reported to me that he had seen, on his way along the beach, a number of boxes of kauri gum, and the keel of a vessel. I also heard that the mast of a vessel had come on shore between Ahipara aud Herekino. I have directed the natives to take charge of the property." The following is the crew that sailed in the Sylph : — John Boult, captain, son-in-law of Mr Mariner, Kaipara ; Thomas Cockburn, aged 27, born at Dublin, last served in Sylph, Auckland, Ist mate; Thomas Heselin, aged 20, born at Hull, last served in London, A.8. ; John Perks, aged 23 born at Warwick, cook and steward ; C. W. Lincoln, aged 21, born in America, last served in Sea Serpent, Wellington, A.8. ; G. Erichson, aged 23, born at Norway, last served in Sylph, Auckland, A.B. [Late advices state that there is little doubt of the loss of the vessel.] We (" Canterbury Press ") have been informed, by a gentleman- who has just arrived in Christchurch from the Chatham Islands, that great fears existed there that the schooner Sea Serpent had been lost. The vessel left the Chatham Islands, bound for Wellington, in July last, since which time nothing has been heard of her. She had on board as passengers Mr and Miss Hunt, the son and daughter of an old resident on Pitt Island, and Mr M'Guinness, the chief officer of the whaler Kutherine, which bhip was lost on Pitt Island a short time previously. Mr Hunt had with him about LIOOO in cash, intending to purchase gojds in Wellington, The crew consisted of six hands all told. The day after the Sea Serpent left a very heavy gale was experienced at the Islands from the westward, during which it is conjectured the vessel foundered.
